July 1, 2003

All is fresh is Vaderville. Since '03 rolled in, we have put more parties "in the books" than ever. I thought my exhale after Che's bashment at Flow would last for a minute... but the next two Saturdays saw Paul and Janeene's wedding and Branch. I'm glad I could do my part in making so many people happy (and sweaty)...

Ok, is it just me, or does it seem like we've become obsessed with lists? Everyone has a top 100, top 22 - some kind of countdown... Hey, who am I to ignore the demands of the consumer? Below, the top ten things VV wants you to know.
- Eddie King, Jr.

* Happy Birfdays to E, Leevert, Nakia, Ebony, Feit, Frances, Ari, Phil, and Jacqueline Rose who was born on the 2nd; congrats to Michele and Michael!! And, to Chris and Lucria!

"These Ten Things I Know Are True!"

10. No one sang more versions of his own songs than Bob Marley. (No one had more kids, either).
9. The worst smells in the city include project elevators, sidewalks in front of restaurants (after 3:00 AM, if you want to be specific), and little kids who've been playing outside. Some of the best are pretzels, rain on concrete, and that heat blast from the little window of a laundry room.

8. People will always debate what the greatest [hip-hop] album of all time is. The determining factor for me is the CD that no matter when I turn it on, I always listen to it straight through. That means, not skipping any songs (including skits!). How many albums can you honestly say that about? I've got two: Outkast, "ATLiens" and Nas, "Illmatic" - in that order.

7. Your lives are not truly complete if you haven't met Jalen. The little one just had his first day at the beach - a little traumatic at first, but he's a trooper. Give dem a run, J! (Peep those dimples).

6. The most important element of a party? Lighting. (Feel free to deduce your own reasoning).

5. You're missing out if you don't have at least one cool aunt. I've got a bunch, but none like Aunt Hope and Aunt Phil.

4. There is a major difference between asking for one song and not knowing how to dance and asking for an entire genre of "reggae" and having the same fate. That's a problem.

3. If you've never seen "The Five Heartbeats," you're missing an all-time classic (and, you probably don't know who the great Eddie King is!).

2. I can only speak for myself here, but when it comes to requests, there is no science on how to get a song played. Here's what I know:   a) Sending the best looking girl in your crew up to me carries no more weight than sending the ugliest one   b) Understanding music and genre is crucial - there's absolutely no reason why I should be asked to play a waltz while Lumidee is on (yes, that did happen)   c) Saying thank you after your song is played will help the next person get a request. You may not care, but the next time you're spurned, it's probably because of the last ungrateful person before you   d) Tips are great, but if I don't feel like playing something, it won't get played.

1. Whether it is or not, South Carolina seems so far away...
