Well, I guess my blank-page syndrome had to come to an end sooner or later. After a laid back summer, I am getting back into the swing of things for the fall. Naked Wednesdays came to an end on the 1st with a real nice send-off. One of the early September days saw a celebration of the 80's -- and, not just the pop/rock 80's. I have to tell you, getting to play Joe-Ski Love, Dana Dane, Full Force, Wham, and a host of other gem was real rewarding. It just reminded me about the feelings music used to evoke. Made me wonder even more about what songs today will do that in years to come . . . who knows. Anyway, enjoy this month's read "Get To Know Me" and I'll see you out soon. Big big ups to the birthday folks for October: Biggest ones being Grandma's 85th (Mama!) and Gillian's . . . 25th ;) Sheldon, Khamen, Karl, Claire, Jemmalyn, AJ, Catherine a.k.a. Miss Whine-Behind-The-Big-Truck, Michelle W., Rob E., Kim Coops, and Kate -- better see y'all out to celebrate! - V Squared "Get To Know Me" It starts the way it always starts -- I've got some random song stuck in my head that I can't seem to kick . . . for a month! Ever since the old school jam at Naked Lunch, I've had this track - apparently from the Beat Street 2 soundtrack - stuck in my head, "Ralph Rolle" -- never heard of it? "Yes we are the Phony Four MC's and we are the worst rappers that ever could be/ We all got together, to sing this rap; we know we're bad, we know we're whack . . ." Yeah, that's what I deal with on the day-to-day. So, there's a part in the song where this one dude is pretending to be Mr. T and listing all these things about himself: " . . . I like greasing my head, until it shines/ I like wearing my socks, until they break/ I like eating A-1 without no steak . . ." Somehow, in my head that translated into, "Why don't you tell folks about yourself in your rambling way?" Don't ask . . . (And, no -- this isn't 88.1, so I don't think I'll resurrect the freestyle abilities). I'm a pretty simple guy. I turn on Bob Marley on rainy and sunny days -- not in between...If you're playing Outkast, I'm listening . . . Can't stand the smell of vinegar or the way brothers are wearing their hats today -- do they realize what we went through to get those bends? Just lazy . . . I love Ketchup with my burger and fries, but won't eat it on my hot dogs . . . I think "Yes, Dear" is the worst show on television, and the NBA offseason is too long . . . I'm crazy about my godson who drops everything to give me a hug when I walk in the door -- but, if he bites me again, it's gonna be me and Jalen . . . I am obsessed with stand-up comedy and don't care if I'm the only person I know who thinks Ellen is hysterical and Mario Cantone is awful . . . I love Mark Jackson, Conan O'Brien, "The Original Kings of Comedy" and "The Wood" . . . I wish Time Warner would take off that brother who says that 'on demand programming' "sort of unequivocally changed my life" -- how can it "sort of" unequivocally? Idiot . . . I love packing, watching good commercials, and I never buy clothes without trying them on first (yes, even t-shirts; no, not underwear) . . . I sometimes wish the old-school at noon was actually the new-school at noon (and the rest was old-school, if you didn't follow) . . . I can't stand walking on alcohol-soaked floors at the end of a night . . . I take great pleasure in helping folks lose themselves on the dancefloor -- drunk or not . . . I drink more water than anyone . . . Pleasure for me can come in the form of cutting coupons, hearing a cool accent, or reading "Goodnight Moon" . . . And, although he was wrong, I'm glad Rush Limbaugh said what he said. Donovan himself said he thought we were past that. Is he living in the same country I am? What came out in the week to follow is that we are far from past race being an issue in football or society. Silencing voices prevents change -- I'm glad we got to talk about it . . . Looking over this all -- maybe I'm not that simple. Tell you what - give me some oxtail, water, and a forum to make people happy and I'm good . . . |
